Here are some thoughts and observation about modern medicine that may be beneficial:
Excuse our mess on this page while we finish putting it together
As a physical therapist I have worked with many people who have had chronic pains and problems. I have read, studied, observed, and researched many things. I am not against doctors or medicines but here are some observations of the current state of medicine.
I am not writing this to offend anyone, get in a debate, or even say I am correct. I am just trying to point out that modern medicine is amazing and can do wonderful things; however it also has its limitations and drawbacks.
It also does not have to be modern medicine OR alternative medicine. They can work together to achieve a more complete healing.
If you believe that ADHD or depression or fibromyalgia or ..... is caused by
a lack of something in your body (deficiency in hormones or some protein)
a genetic problem you inherited
Damaged organs or cells that are not functioning properly
etc
Then you will talk to your doctor and be put on a medication for the rest of your life to manage these symptoms.
If you believe that ADHD or depression or fibromyalgia or ..... is caused by a combination of things such as
repeatedly training your mind and body to respond certain ways (see our page on the rules of the mind)
repeatedly doing things that keep your body and mind from functioning properly
Not doing enough things that your body and mind need
learned behaviors, habits, and beliefs
Inherited genetic predispositions
Then you will realize that there is not one thing that is going to fix your issue and it may take time or consistency. You will also realize that it is possible to fix the problem and not just address symptoms the rest of your life.
This is a really good video that explains some of this. Click here to watch
A diagnosis can be good or bad. It can be correct, partially correct, or flat out wrong. A diagnosis doesn't have to be a life sentence.
I have seen many people who have suffered with some symptoms for 5, 10, 30 or more years but I was able to resolve their symptoms. Many of these had been working with doctors for years trying to resolve it. Some had been given the wrong diagnosis. Most had been given a diagnosis that matched their symptoms but never identified the cause of those symptoms or what to do about it. It makes me sad to think of all the years they suffered needlessly. All the medication they took that really didn't help.
When you go to a doctor, they do their best to gather all the symptoms you are presenting with and with some results of your test to figure out what condition this is most like. Unfortunately:
a lot of things cause similar symptoms (an upset stomach can be caused by food poisoning, nerves, virus, bacteria, etc).
Some of their tests show positive results for things that aren't related (if you have shoulder pain you will most likely get an x-ray. Almost everyone over 40 has some arthritis in the shoulder. Many times the shoulder pain is then blamed on arthritis. The arthritis can be all of the problem, part of the problem, or none of the problem and had been there for years but is just the only thing that shows up on the x-ray).
And some things we just don't have good tests to detect they are part of the problem.
In many ways modern medicine is getting better at identifying a diagnosis. A correct diagnosis can lead to better outcomes because they know what has helped other people with the same group of symptoms.
Most people take many of their diagnoses as a life sentence or the doctor makes it sound like it is just part of getting old and there is nothing you can do about it.
Another problem with a diagnosis is it becomes a label. Once we take on that label as an identity, our subconscious mind will do things to make it a reality or will do things to hold on to it.
Most medicines only treat symptoms, they do not actually fix the problem.
For example:
Cortisone shots may alleviate the pain for a few months or if you are lucky a year or two. The pain almost always returns and the next shot does not last as long. This is because the shot only took away the inflammation but not the problem that caused the inflammation in the first place. The problem is still there and is still putting stress on that body part. Which means the damage continues to get worse even though you don't have pain for a few months.
Anxiety, depression, or other medications for mental conditions don't actually fix the anxiety, depression, or what is causing those symptoms. They just affect your thinking or body enough that you can manage things a little better. However most people I have talked to don't like the other way these medications make them feel so they usually eventually quit taking them. In addition the thing causing the anxiety or depression is usually still there and getting worse. (Youtube link of depression story)
Insulin does not cure diabetes. It does help keep some symptoms under control but there is still damage being caused to your body. Blood pressure pills do help keep the blood pressure from being too high but still does not resolve what caused the blood pressure to be high in the first place which means your cardiovascular system is still not working 100%. It also means you have to take the medicine to keep your symptoms under control, but usually the body changes which means you eventually will need a stronger dose to get the same benefit.
Almost all medications have side effects. I have had many patients who talked to their doctor or pharmacist and were taken off of some of their medications. Not surprisingly many of their aches, pains, and other symptoms went away.
Many times one doctor will put you on a medication for something and no one ever takes you off of it or checks to see if you still need it.
Many medications were labeled "safe and effective" yet every year there are many medications recalled due to all the damage they have caused. Every year we hear of a new lawsuit for victims who had seriously been injured by a drug that had been approved by the FDA and prescribed by their doctor. We often hear of studies being manipulated to show better results.
I do think vaccines have saved a lot of lives and a lot of suffering. However, just because one vaccine is beneficial does not mean all vaccines work or that all vaccines or beneficial or necessary or that all vaccines are safe.
Medication can be amazing and help us in many ways. However, there is a lot of money to be made with pharmacy. They have done a good job turning doctors into walking prescription pads. There is not one thing causing your problem and not one thing going to fix you. Medicine can be amazing in the short term as part of the solution. Unfortunately western medicine seems to place all their emphasis on medicine as the only answer for everything. They have everyone looking for the magic pill to fix whatever and many of these medications you are then on for life.
There is a difference between a medicine and a drug.
There is usually not one thing causing your problem and not one thing that is going to fix it. Be careful of things (including doctors) that make you think theirs is the only solution or that there is no solution.
Modern medicine can do amazing things, but is not perfect.
Hydrogen peroxide
Cigarettes / smoking
Bed rest
FDA approved drugs recalled each year. Law suits for damages caused by drugs.
I do think most people working to create drugs are trying to use their skills to help people. Most doctors are doing their best to help people. We can do a lot of good, but we can't do better than mother nature. The body is the best physician. Kind of like how you can water your plants every day for 3 weeks. You can keep them from dying and they will grow some, but one small rain will cause them to flourish more than the 3 weeks of watering.
Not all doctors, therapists, dentists, researcher, etc are the same.
